How can I get to Mt Buller ?
This is a common question from our guests atMany of our guests do not reside in Victoria or even in Australia and are coming to Mt Buller after travelling via plane. If our guests are from Australia some have never travelled to the Victorian High Country before and it is quite often the first time they have ever seen snow. So as you can imagine it can be quite a daunting part of a very exciting trip. We recommend that International/Interstate travellers that fly into Melbourne hire a car and drive to Elm Riverside in Merrijig other options are to get themselves to a VLINE service http://www.vline.com.au. There are also package deals available, more information on those on the Mt Buller website.
Another area our visitors need to consider is driving in snow and if they and their vehicle are capable of driving in it safely, for themselves and other visitors to the mountain.
I will provide as much information as possible in this post but there is a continually changing situation on the mountain at the moment in regards to the transport providers as a new coach company TravelSafe Bus Hire Pty Ltd (TravelSafe) was appointed however their vehicle provider Bendigo Coachlines has recently pulled out and they are sorting that out as we speak.
Mount Buller is a VERY popular place during the winter snow season, our first recommendation is to BOOK EARLY , this relates to accommodation, travel and your on mountain requirements, entry and ski lifts etc. Booking early will give you several things one being some early bird discounts and two peace of mind knowing you are all sorted.
Second recommendation is to consider traveling to the mountain MID WEEK. In past years the weekends have gotten so busy that it has been necessary to close the mountain to new travelers because it has reached capacity. This can happen mid to late morning and eventually it will reopen as people come back down late in the afternoon. This is super frustrating because it applies to people who have booked in advance and have all the tickets ready for the lifts and entry but once the mountain is full its full and no day trippers are allowed.
If you do book for the weekends make sure you get up there as early as possible in the morning, this will help you to ensure that you will in fact make it on to the mountain. Depending on how early you get up you may even miss the ques to get into the carpark.
Nearly all of our guests will drive from Melbourne to Merrijig, whether it be in their own car or a hire vehicle. There is plenty of FREE car parking available at the Elm so bringing your own vehicle is not a problem. You can also catch a VLINE coach from Melbourne that will connect with an MMBL coach at the Mansfield depot that can drop you just across from the ELM. Bookings are essential. If you wish to drive your own vehicle up the mountain you will most likely need snow chains depending on conditions. The requirements can be found on the Mt Buller Facebook/Website page. Snow chains can be hired in many places in Mansfield and Merrijig nearby the apartment.
As I mentioned in the start of this post the ON Mountain coach shuttle service is changing and we do not have up to date details but we strongly recommend that you study the Mt Buller website and keep up to date. Remember this is quite often a once in a lifetime experience for you and your family so make sure you educate yourself as to what is required, expect that it is not going to be cheap and you will be making sure that you will all have a safe and fun experience by taking advantage of both the public and private services available to visitors.
My final comment is to repeat that considering a MID WEEK visit will offer you cheaper prices and less crowds getting there and on the mountain itself. You will appreciate the experience so much better if you can do this. The Elm Riverside Accommodation is already heavily booked for most of the 2019 Snow Season so get in quick for the last few weekend vacancies and look at taking advantage of the mid week availability.
